HISTORY
Risen Christ Catholic School is a consolidation of five parish Catholic elementary schools. The five parishes—Incarnation, Holy Name, St. Stephen’s, St. Albert the Great and Holy Rosary—have a long history of providing Catholic education for its members and the surrounding community. In 1993, the decision was made to consolidate the schools into one in order to ensure the long-term future of Catholic elementary education in these south Minneapolis neighborhoods – and Risen Christ School was born.
While it began as a consolidation of five Catholic parish schools, the school embraces children from many different churches. In addition to the five founding parishes, students from 13 other Catholic churches and 31 non-Catholic churches attend Risen Christ School.
The five founding parishes continue to play a central role in the life of the school and a number of sponsoring churches now support the mission of Risen Christ. St. Olaf’s in downtown Minneapolis, St. Patrick’s in Edina and Pax Christi in Eden Prairie are a few of the parishes that have volunteers actively involved at Risen Christ. Students from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area Catholic high schools and colleges are also volunteers at Risen Christ.
When Risen Christ opened its doors in the fall of 1993, there were two campuses – one for grades K-2 and the other for grades 3-8. In September 2003, the school opened as one campus after completion of a $3.7 million renovation and expansion. In addition to adding new kindergarten, science and math classrooms, the project included a new media center and computer lab, an entirely new kitchen for the hot lunch program, a new elevator, new playground and improvements to every classroom in the school building.
