Community is the order of the day and requires an education which builds relationships. We accept the challenge to educate people, rather than handing them a product.

We are not telling theology today, we are doing theology. We practice justice as well as discuss it, we make peace and pray for it at the same time.

Celebrating 30 Years of Catholic Education

Transforming the Lives of Children in South Minneapolis

1993
Risen Christ Catholic School was formed in 1993 as the consolidation of five urban parish schools: Holy Name, Holy Rosary, Incarnation, St. Albert the Great and St. Stephen’s to preserve and strengthen Catholic education for new generations of children in the heart of south Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school originally opened at two sites: the West Campus (located at the former Incarnation Catholic School) and the East Campus (our present location, at the former Holy Name Catholic School).

1995
Risen Christ becomes a World Citizen International Peace Site.

1998
Risen Christ is officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a Board of Directors.

2003
The West Campus is closed and all students K-8 attend Risen Christ at the newly expanded and renovated East Campus (formerly Holy Name Catholic School).

2007
Risen Christ becomes a primary feeder into Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, a new high school located nearby in the Phillips neighborhood of south Minneapolis.

2014
Risen Christ begins transitioning to a Dual Immersion program becoming the first Catholic Dual Immersion school in Minnesota and one of only 41 nationwide. Risen Christ is one of 12 Catholic elementary schools around the country selected to form the Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools (TWIN-CS), an initiative of the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston College. The first cohort of Dual Immersion students at Risen Christ begin Kindergarten.

2016
Risen Christ is evaluated by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) to assess the seven strands of Dual Immersion education. Following CAL’s expert recommendations, Risen Christ implements its Dual Immersion model one grade level at a time.

2017
The Fulfilling the Promise capital campaign to eliminate Risen Christ’s debt is launched.

2019
Students led by Risen Christ teacher Susana Villalobos complete a new mural in the main hallway in which Christ is surrounded by a variety of national flowers representing the native countries of our students and families.

2022
All students in grades K-8 are part of the Dual Immersion educational model for the first time. The Fulfilling the Promise capital campaign concludes successfully, and Risen Christ becomes debt free for the first time in its history!

2023
The first cohort of Dual Immersion students graduate from Risen Christ! Students in our Class of 2023 are among the first in the country to receive the Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award from Boston College. Risen Christ prepares to celebrate its 30th Anniversary.
