Rising Together: A New School Year Begins

There is something special about the first day of school—the excitement of seeing friends and the feeling that a whole new year of possibilities is ahead. For our Risen Christ Religion teacher, Ms. Lara, the first day of school brought all of that excitement, plus one unexpected challenge: a classroom that almost reached 90 degrees! By the end of the day, she was more than ready for a little fresh air. As part of September’s Bible Month, she began reviewing some key facts about the Bible with her final class and showed them a picture of Saint Jerome. Before she could ask who he was, one student immediately answered, “That’s who translated the Bible.”

Every question Ms. Lara asked was answered correctly. The students remembered lessons they had learned the previous year, which gave her the important reminder that the seeds of knowledge she works hard to plant may bloom months or years later. One student in particular stood out. Last year, he struggled with staying focused in class and turning in assignments. On this first day back, he was one of the quickest to respond and even asked thoughtful follow-up questions. Ms. Lara listened and watched him take in every answer.

After a long, hot day, this moment filled her with gratitude. As she reflected, she shared a goal for the year ahead:

This is the lasting impact of a Risen Christ education. The work of a teacher may not always produce an immediate result. Sometimes, the most meaningful evidence appears months or years later, when a student remembers a lesson or asks a thoughtful question.
